Actually, i believe that Rex Walls was a good person. However, he did let his temper get the best of him at times. This was evident when he assaulted his wife. What was mainly wrong with Rex was that he had a bad parenting style. My guess is that he didn't have a father figure or his father did the things that Rex was doing. Also, you knew he was a good person deep down because of how nice he was when he found out he was dying. He wanted to see his children a lot more then. Rex really cared about the kids.
I think that Rex Walls was a very good person. He at least showed his love for his family and tried to make money any way he could. I just believe that he made all the wrong choices like when he lost it in ways that were stupid. But he gave care to his children like a father would. To answer the question he was a good person with a bad temper. Although he would come home drunk, he would wake up the next morning and trying to get his family's life on track.
I believe that Rex Walls could not overcome his addictions with drinking and gambling. I also believe that the fact that he did not have a good upbringing affected the way he raised the children. I think that his addictions took control of his actions and caused him to do terrible things and lose his temper. Deep down though, he cared more then anything about his kids. He showed this by trying to stop drinking and actually feeling guilty about his actions. Rex was not the best father, but he was not evil.
Rex Walls was far from a good father figure. He gambled what little money his family had, and spent a large sum of what was left over to satisfy his drinking habits. However, I do not think that he was an evil man. He really didn't know any better. It is suggested in the book that his childhood was far from easy. I'm not saying it was right of him to turn to alcohol in order to drown his problems out, but I do understand why he might want to forget his past. And despite being a terrible role model for his children, he did love his family. When his mother died and Lori begins singing 'Ding dong the witch is dead', he snaps at her and tells her to have respect for her grandmother. And in the end of the book, when he is about to die, he wants to see his children more than anything. Overall, I believe that Rex Walls was a broken man who loved his family, and showed his love in peculiar ways.
Though at first Mary Walls does not strike you as the antagonist in the story, at times she made bad choices that directly impacted her children. One example of this would be where she horded chocolate for herself and watched her children starve or how she did not attempt to make money for her family through teaching, quitting the job as soon as she got the chance. Though I believe Mary Walls cared about her children, sometimes she inflicted as much damage as their drunken father.
I believe that Rex was a person that had good intensions, but struggled to follow through with his commitments. I do not believe that you can call Rex evil for trying to give the family hope. His ideas were sometimes far-fetched. However, these over confident ideas about the families future were what the children needed to get through their day to day lives. Rex's temper is the one thing that keeps me from calling him a moral character. He would do unspeakable things when he went on his rages that were proceded by liquor.
I believe that Rex Walls wasn't evil. He manipulated his family, mistreated his wife, but he was a good father about 50% of the time. His main problem was that he was a drunk and that caused his temper to flare up. I don't think it was his fault though. I think that he had an evil mom and that she caused Rex to turn out the way he did. He treated his family with care and instilled good qualities in his kids half of the time. That is why i say that he was a good man with a bad temper,
