Discussion Questions

1. Although Jeanette and her family were alive do you think they were actually "living"?
2. Do you think the Walls family really were a family considering how Maureen grew up?

  1. I think that the parents did not try to raise Maureen well. They seemed to have given up at almost everything once they got to Welch. Rex gambled and drank the whole time they lived there, and he never tried to get a job. Forcing the mother to teach. However she was not actually doing any work. Lori, Jeannette, and Brian did all her lesson plans and grading. So the other children were so busy trying to help their parents that they did not have time to give Maureen a good childhood. Once Maureen started living with other families frequently, they thought she was better off without them anyways. She probably was better off from a food and shelter standpoint, but she never had the family aspect that is such an important part of Jeannette's childhood in the book.
