2) It is implied in the book that Jeanette's mother owns a piece of land that is worth 1 million dollars. Suppose that this land is sold in the book, when Jeanette was 3 years old. How would her life be different that the one she lives in now?
While money troubles took a toll on Jeanette’s life, having wealth would not fix everything. If Jeanette’s mom had sold the property her life would have been different, but still similar. The obvious things like their home/living conditions would improve but the Walls family would still be the Walls family. Jeanette’s father would still struggle with maintaining a steady income and would continue to come home drunk every other night. Her mother would still have mood swings and an inability to face the facts. While these aspects would remain the same, the extra money could also open up some positive opportunities for Jeanette. The Walls’ children could have the opportunity to attend a good school and have a more normal and stable life as well. The million dollars could change a lot of things about Jeanette’s life, but there would still be certain aspects that remain the same.
