Blind love?

In your opinion, is Helena's view of love in her monologue still true today? (Act I, Scene I, Lines 232-257) Explain your reasoning.

  1. I would say that Helena's view that love is blind and can make you do crazy things is still true today. Helena will do whatever it takes to make Demetrius fall in love with her even if that means ratting out her best friend Hermia. Helena talks about not being able to understand why Demetrius likes Hermia when she is just as pretty. Her reasoning of this is, that love is blind. Even now people still fall in love with their opposite or someone who may not seem compatible to them. But i think it is because love is still blind and you cannot explain why you fall for a person nobody would have expected. People still do crazy things when they are in love because they are not thinking realistically and they make crazy decisions. Being in love can feel like a dream and i think that is partially why Shakespeare made the play magical and made crazy things happen in the forest. Because real love feels similar and can be just as complicated. So yes i think Helena's view on love is still existent today.

  3. I do believe Helen's view on love is still true to modern day. Helen says in Midsummer Night's Dream "Love looks not with eyes but with the mind". What Helen is saying is love is blind. When people are in love they do not see the other person's flaws, they love the things that the other person hates, and they strive to be a better person. That is what true love is. When you are in love, you do not look with your eyes, instead you look with your heart. That is why everyone strives to be in love and be loved. Love can transform you. This is what Helen is trying to say Midsummer Night's Dream.

  4. Helena’s view is that love is blind, childish, and makes people do crazy things. I agree that this still true. Modern day, people kill and do other crazy things for love. Love is blind because it is not uncommon for people to cheat on someone who they believe that they love, and who would cheat on someone they love. Love is also blind because people fall in love with people that they would seem to not like. I do not agree with Helena’s view that love is childish. Love is something to be taken seriously and should never be underestimated.

  5. I think that Helena's view on love is totally right. I mean, partially right. I mean... heck, what do I mean?
I mean, I agree on her saying that love is blind, and that love is not something that can be understood or reasoned with, nor does it make any sense. I agree that love is dumb, stupid even, and that the things people do out of love could be borderline insane. Actually, both insane and stalker-ish. I also agree that love makes people want to lie more, and while it doesn't exactly encourage playing games, it certainly does not decourage it.
But I don't agree that love is fickle. At some point in her speech, Helena says that before he saw Hermia, Demetrius had eyes only for Helena, but all that changed once he saw Hermia. If this is the case, Demetrius lied about being in love with Helena. I don't care what either of them said, nor do I care about what they claimed to have felt. If someone is really in love, they stay in love. One does not simply fall out of love. Like Jonny Depp once said, 'If you're in love with 2 people at the same time, choose the person you fell in love with second, because If you really loved the first person you wouldn't have fallen in love with the second person in the first place', and thus it still applies to us today.

  6. In my opinion, Helena's view of love is still very true today. Her monologue pretty much says that love is blind, and that's very true. Sometimes people can love anyone, without reason or second thought. This explains her evident crush on Demitrius. He's a bad guy, but she fails to see it. She still loves him, even after he played her, and dumped her for Hermia. There are many cases of this type of situation today. Also, she tells that true love isn't only tied to appearances. That's why she says that Cupid is painted blind. Because someone can't just love another for their looks, but also for their personality and their qualities. This is also still true today.

  7. I do believe that Helen's view that love is blind still applies today. What she means by this is that when one person and another person are in love, they become oblivious to things in the outside world. I remember talking in class about scientists doing a scan on a schizophrenic's brain and a person who newly started a romantic relationship, and they looked exactly the same. This shows us that when people are in love, they think about that person constantly, and they do crazy things for that person. For example, people now go crazy on Valentine's Day for people they like or love, and they ask them to be their valentine. They give flowers, candy, and many gifts to their valentines. This is one example that shows us that people now do crazy things for love now just as they did in the days on Midsummer Night's Dream.

  8. I do not think that Helena’s view in her monologue is still true today. With the Internet we have the opportunity to see how people look at their best and worst moments, every second of the day. We are also constantly bombarded pictures of people who are a lot better looking than you are ever going to be. Saying love is blind is basically declaring that physical looks have absolutely zero influence over true love, which I think is a romantic, but totally untrue notion. Beauty may not be the determining factor in a relationship, but I certainly think it has an influence. I think love has bad vision, good enough to see the darks and lights, but not able to make out the details.

  9. I do not think that Helena's view in her monologue is still true today. I believe that in older times love was blind because it was forced. The women were forced into marriages, they couldn't control whether their husbands were handsome or not. A lot of times they had to learn to love him for the inside not the outside. I also think that this saying was made as a way to convince daughters to marry instead of becoming a nun. If the daughter was betrothed to someone who was ugly, the mother could use a saying such as "honey love is blind, it doesn't matter what he looks like. In today I think that the saying still doesn't stand. For a different reason though. Today I think that a lot of relationships are based solely on looks. That is why the rate of divorce continues to get higher and higher. Sure, you have love stories where someone who is not attractive finds their loving prince or something like that, but it is not that common. If you had to choose between Susan Boyle or Brooklyn Decker, you would choose Brooklyn. Susan could have the best personality in the world but 9 out of 10 times. Brooklyn would be chosen. Love is not blind

  10. Helena sees her love for Demetrius as this beautiful thing that she wants him to reciprocate. Unfortunately, this kind of unreciprocated and constant love happens all the time. People spend their lives dreaming about their perfect someone, and start to change them in their minds. They morph into the embodiment of all that they want. Helena clearly has begun to do so, and freely admits it when she says, "And as he errs, doting on Hermia's eyes, So I, admiring of his qualities". She has just said that Demetrius is making a mistake by loving Hermia, but that she still admires him regardless of that. She does not want to let go of her obsession, and even though she is really in love, it takes two people to have a relationship. In addition, if Demetrius was really in love with Helena first, but then fell in love eith Hermia, he can't truly love her. Also, he's in love with her best friend which is not a good quality to have in a husband. Love is defintely blind, because Demetrius can see Helena for what she is, an infatuated young woman, but Helena is blind to all of Demetrius's faults and flaws. Contrary to the popular meaning of love is blind, I'd say that her love does not see past Demetrius's face and physical characteristics and completely overlooks his heart.

  11. I see Helena's view on love is mostly still true today. She says that love is blind because she really is the one who loves Demetrius, and not Hermia. Helena thinks that he should see this and because hernia and Helena are equally beautiful that he should marry her. While Hermia does not want anything from Demetrius, he is blindly in love with her. I think he does not understand this and still chasing after her when he follows her into the forrest. Helena is mad that Demetrius is in love with Hermia, who denigrated him at every opportunity, while Helena always is nice to Demetrius. Helena calls love a child, because it is "beguiled". Also she says that love has no judgement, and is quick to come to a decision. She is thinking that love is blind and made Demetrius fall in love with the wrong person. For the most part i agree with her view on love.

  12. I think it still rings true. That is why Shakespeare is still commonly read today. He wrote about lasting ideas. Love is blind, even today. I think love is blind, because people can look past so many things because they love someone. If someone is hurting somebody you love or hurting you physically or emotionally, many people look past these things because they claim to love someone. Love clouds people's judgement. In A Midsummer Night's Dream, Demetrius' love for Hermia is blind. He loves her because she is beautiful and because Hermia's father wants him to marry her, but he overlooks the woman who truly loves him, Helena. His love for Hermia is blind because, Hermia doesn't love him at all and constantly lets him know it while Helena proclaims her love and he ignores it. Love is blind, back then and now.

  14. I believe that Helena's view of love is partly true in today's world. People have more freedom now, and can make decisions without being forced into them by an arranged marriage or other contract. In addition to freedom, the world in connected now in a way that the people in Athens would never have imagined. People now can travel all over and meet people from other places, and have contact with people of all races throughout the world. The internet also allows for people to know others even better, and so the "blindness" factor is less prominent. In Athens, people had a limited spectrum of people to marry compared to the entire world of people today, which made the infatuation with a person more powerful. However, love can still be blind in today's world. People do crazy things when they are in love, and sometimes the person they love is blind to their affection. I believe that Helena's view of "blind" love is still partially true in the world today, despite the differing societies of Athens and the modern world.

  15. I think that Helena's view on love can still be true today sometimes. Helena loves Demetrius more then any other thing in the world, but he doesn't share the same feelings which frustrates her. She almost attacks love, blaming it for her current state of abandonment. Helena feels that love is ignorant to her feelings towards Demetrius, and that is why he doesn't feel quite the same way about her.
Nowadays, I think that people will either agree or disagree with Helena depending on whatever unique relationships that they've been in. I would say that most people have been in love at least once where the object of their affection doesn't reciprocate similar feelings back, and I think that these people would probably agree with Helena and say that love is blind. Love is blind has become a mutual feeling throughout many people nowadays, so I would say that Helena's views on love are definitely still true today.

  16. I do believe that Helena's view on love is still true today. The fact that Helena is in love with someone that doesn't love her back makes her do crazy things. Many people today experience a situation similar to Helena's and that is why I agree that love is blind. I think love is blind also because she didn't necessarily pick who she fell in love with, but thats what happened and she can't change it. I believe that the idea of love being blind is an idea that will continue to reign true for all generations because its something that humans face day to day. Many people know the feeling of loving someone that doesn't feel the same way back and that is what happened to Helena. Love isn't something that you can change just because its not perfect, or it doesn't work the way you want it to. That is why I agree with Helena when she says that love is blind.

  17. Helena compares love with how Cupid is often pictured - blind - with the two lines 240 and 241, and like Hal says, the thought is quite central to not only her monologue but the entire play itself. Everyone can understand and relate to the truth that Helena utters sadly in the first Act. Many a time will one, heart broken and oaths unfulfilled, look back upon the path they once strutted happily on, on the path where they once locked arms with that betrayer who put on the mask of faith. And one can only regret, gazing into the pouring rain and dampened skies, and reflect on why they acted as they had and why they had even seen anything in that deceiver in the first place. But alas, love is blind, and they nor Helena can do nothing about it, save regret. This has happened tens, hundreds, thousands of times, and each time the victim will wonder how it ended thus. Love is blind, and the lover so blinded with bliss that when the dream ends they will feel a greater sorrow than had they not even touched that flowery meadow.

  18. Helena believes that love is blind. Love is not logical, instead it does not only follow those who can love. Sometimes loves strikes between two people that are not meant to have love together. This is what Helena goes through every day. She loves Demetrius with all of her heart and it kills her inside that she cannot be with him. She feels that her love was denied to her by things out of her power. Demetrius does not love her however, because he is trying to wed Hermia. Helena is in love with someone that she cannot be with, this is why she believes that love is blind. I believe that this saying, love is blind, is still an accurate statement in the modern world. I think things happen like this all of the time. These exact situations with arranged marriages may not be very common anymore, but the idea of lovers being separated by other factors, like location, parents, or many other things, are still relevant.

  19. Helena comes out the gate presenting her feelings stating that, "Love looks not with the eyes but with the mind; therefore is winged Cupid painted blind..." . I'd like to break this quote down. Helena referring to Cupid as blind because Cupid is know to cause people to fall in love with each other at sight/first sight. So for Cupid to be blind implies that Helena's physical appearance isn't good enough to catch Demetrius' eye to get him to fall in love with her. Towards the end of Helena's lines that she's speaking, she gets mischievous. She wants to try and get Demetrius alone so that she can persuade him to love her. This example is present in today's society. If we (as humans) see a person that we once liked or still like/love but the other person has moved on, instead of moving on ourselves, we tend to mess up that new relationship by trying to win the person over. This usually turns out bad for all 3 people, and usually nobody benefits from this happening. I really believe that Helena was just drastically in her feelings to the point where she couldn't let Demetrius go no matter how much he said no. This is evident when Helena states that her love only grows the more Demetrius declines her.

  20. "Love can transpose to form and dignity.
Love looks not with the eyes but with the mind.
And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.
Nor hath Love’s mind of any judgment taste—
Wings and no eyes figure unheedy haste.
And therefore is Love said to be a child,"

This means love can make worthless things beautiful and can make anything beautiful. Love looks into hearts and personality with mind, not with eyes. When you're in love, judgement is worsened. We have no good judgement when in love. When we are in love, we are reckless and hasty. Love is blind. I believe that in modern day, love has evolved into something we can not define. It is different for everyone. Many people say chivalry is dead. I believe that with chivalry comes blindness in love. Love being blind is not a bad thing, it makes you believe you and the person you're in love with are the only people in the world and that is all that matters. I do believe that love is blind still today. Love is love and feelings are feelings.

  21. Helena says that love is blind and that Cupid must have be blind . In my opion it could in some ways be true. There is not much "love at first sight" happening everyday so at this view the quote is correct. It is correct because if cupid was blind love would be completly random as it is sometimes. Instead of just seeing someone beautiful and loveing them instatly, people get to know eachother. Also love should not only be with how beautiful a person looks but thier personality. We hear a lot how people fall in love at first sight and lived together forever. In reality that is completly impratical. Love should not only be about the looks of a person but instead everything that makes a person who they are to be loved. That is why Cupid could indeed be blind.

  22. Helena talks about love being blind which means it is hard for you to see the faults of the person you love. I feel like modern day love is not like that at all. I believe that because of all of the enchanting romance movies and novels people have an unrealistic idea of love. Therefore I think love is no longer blind. It seems to me that because of many romance movies and novels the smallest faults do not go unnoticed. I think that is why the divorce rate is so high. I definitely believe that because of pop culture there is no longer blind love.

  23. I believe that the way Helena describes love as being blind is still true today. Love can cause many to do crazy. On the news, you see how men or women are blinded by love and do bad things for their partners because they can believe that they can get love from their partners, but in reality are being used. In many stories, we find many cases where people use "fake" love to control people to do terrible things, but make sure that they take the blame if caught out of love. We can see that love can cause many people to make mistakes in life.

  24. Helena is saying that love is fickle and that people will fall in love often with a random person, even if they are the same as another person. Helena is as fair as Hermia, but Demetrius doesn't care for Helena anymore. I think this fact might have been true 30-50 years ago, but not anymore. People used to get married even if they knew they weren't "soul mates". That's why most everyone got married, and few people stayed single. But nowadays, people are really picky when it comes to relationships. More and more people are coming out of college not in a stable relationship, getting divoreced, and going online to find thier perfect match. People are no longer content with just having a good mate, they have to be PERFECT. That's why fewer and fewer people are getting married.

  25. Helena declares that love is blind. By this she means that love between two people comes not from what they see on the outside of each other, but rather their heart and personality. She also declares that love can be reckless and make bad choices/cheat in lines 243-245, "Wings, and no eyes, figure unheedy haste...in choice he is so oft beguiled." I believe that both of these statements stand true today. While lots of things change over time, something as universal as love has stayed, for the most part, the same. Most people (or so I'd like to think) would probably say that they married the person they did because they love them for who they are, not what they look like or other factors. And just as there were reckless and bad choices in love back then, there still are today. We're always hearing about people cheating on their wives nowadays. From Tiger Woods to Newt Gingrich it's definitely something that still happens. Helena gives her own example of this when she says that Demetrius had promised her that he'd be hers but now he longs for Hermia.

  26. Helena states that love is blind in her monologue. In some cases i believe that love is blind for some people but not for others, depending on the persons thoughts and feelings. People may fall in loves with others without even knowing them first, love at first sight. Love also causes people to do crazy things that aren't even thought of until their in love. Blind love is also reasons many families get divorces because they don't really know each other and end up getting hurt. Thats why you should get to know each other before marriage or a serious relationship.

  27. I think that love is blind in modern day. A lot of peole love someone but they don't feel the same way back. THis leads to people doing crazy things, or things that they would not do normally. In Helena's monolonge she says that love is blind because she love Demitriuss but he doesn't feel the same way back, so this is what leads her into doing crazy things. Its also means that if someone loves another person that much, they don't see their flaws. So I do think that love is blind is true for modern day.
