My discussion questions for you to answer.

1. Describe how the father hurts the family in two different ways.

2. Before they lived in New York what was the responsibility of the kids?

  1. The father hurts his family by spending all of the money in their paycheck on booze instead of food for his family. Even when his family is receiving a constant income, they often go hungry due to all of the money being already spent. The father also rarely gets a job so he can support his kids. The father also never allows his children to live a steady life due to his dislike of staying in one place. The lack of at least that stability causes his children to have little social skills and a bad education.

  2. The father hurt the family in many ways but two ways were when he forced Jeanette to help him win money in the pool hall and when he stole his childrens' money. He asked Jeanette to help him earn money playing pool but she didn't realize he meant she would have to distract the guy he was trying to hustle. He tricked her into helping him do something that she wouldn't have otherwise agreed to. And the second example is when the children are saving money in their piggy bank to go to New York and they come home one day to find it smashed and the money gone. It's obvious to them that their father had taken it to pay for his booze. These were two of the worst things the father ever did to his family that affected them forever.

  3. The father hurt his family in many ways throughout the story. His harsh temper and intense dislike of following the rules led him to do many things that would scar his children for the rest of their lives. First off, Rex Walls was irresponsible when it came to the family's money. As soon as Rose Mary brought her paycheck home, Rex would take it and go spend all of it on alcohol. While Rex was out drinking, the rest of the family was left with no money until the next paycheck was picked up. This shows that Rex did not care about the well-being of his family, but only about his own drinking habits. Secondly, as a result of Rex Wall's bad drinking habits, Rex would come home some nights in a drunken rage. He would storm through the door and start yelling at the children and Rose Mary. Jeannette, Brian, and Lori were scared of their father on these nights, and they tried to avoid him in any way possible. Rex Wall's irresponsibility scarred his children for the rest of their lives.

  4. The father hurts the kids in numerous ways. Specifically he had a drinking problem. Every time he needs to drink he does whatever he can to get the money. This involves stealing his own children's money that they worked for. He also comes back home and breaks everything in his path. When Rex left he didn't come back home for several days. Therefore he left his family with no money and a broken family. This type of environment isn't good for anyone to be in. Rex Walls bad choices will stay with his wife and children through their lives.

  5. In the story, The Glass Castle, Jeanette Walls' dad, Rex Walls, hurts the family in many different ways. First, he has a drinking problem and second, he doesn't take care of his family when he is drunk. His drinking problem hurts the whole family because he comes home late or sometimes he would never come home. He would drink alomost ever night and when he came home the whole family would be somewhat scared and would try to get out of his way. He was also not able to maintain his family in a good and healthy way. He would spend his money on alcohol. He would do anything to get the money such as stealing it or pressuring Jeanette to give it him. He was a bad example to his family and hurt them in many ways.

  6. In the glass castle the father hurts his family in two different ways. First of all he hurts them with his drinking problem. This problem hurts his family because Rex can not keep a job so they can not get any money. Without money the kids often went hugry and did only had a few clothes. The second way is that he did not help his family when they needed him most. He took Janett's money and beat his wife and kids. He left for many days and created false hope for his kids.

  7. i think that rex walls hurts the family by gamblig and spending the families mone on foolish things such as: alchoal, gabling, and other things instead of clothing and food for the family. Rex walls is a bad father figure and in many ways is an abusive father.
