Gods and Goddesses

In Greek mythology, gods and goddesses shared control of the universe and were ascribed powers over specific things like the sea, war, love, etc., which is a different model than the Judeo-Christian god, for example, who presides over all things.

If you could create a new god or goddess to reign supreme over a new phenomenon (like a God of the Internet, for example) what you name it? What characteristics would your god or goddess have? Would he or she have human characteristics or supernatural powers, and what would they be? Why?

  1. My god would be the god of Reality. His name is Virkelighed. My god would be 7 feet tall with eyes that look like space and the universe. He would have tribal tattoos all over his body except for his face. His power would be that of turning reality into illusion and illusion into reality. He is a forgotten god who is abnormally powerful even among the gods, but extremely lazy and sleeps for years at a time.

  2. I would add a goddess of distractions. Her name would be Apollonia. Her main supernatural power would be that she could disguise herself as anyone or anything immediately. She would travel the earth in disguise as a human, and would only return to her true goddess form when on Mt. Olympus. She is extremely active and never stays in one place for more than two days at a time. Basically, her job would be to make sure that nobody is working to hard, and that everyone is enjoying there life.

  3. If I could create a new goddess, she would be the goddess of music. Her name would be Mia. She would be tall, have long brown hair, blue eyes, tan skin color, and would have a tattoo of somekind of music note on her wrist. She would have human characteristics but have the supernatural power of playing random music anywhere at any time, but only to the extent where only music lovers could hear it. They would be the only ones who hear it because since they are music lover, they would be the only ones who appreciate her powers.

  4. If i could create a new goddess, it would be the goddess of color and energy. I would name her Colos because Colos means flair in latin. I think color and energy adds flair to anything and makes it exciting. She would look every exotic and have the power to add energy, liveliness and color to anything. I think this is a supernatural characteristic. Colos would glow any where she went because she has so much energy. Her eyes would be electric blue and her hair would flow down her back and be wavy because straight hair doesn't look very lively and her hair changes colors.

  5. My addition would be the god of books. His name is Scriptus. HIs appearance is that of an elderly man, with a long white beard trailing behind him when he walks. He never stops reading, his face constantly inside of a book every second of the day, resulting in multiple bags beneath his eyes. He has more human characteristics than most other gods, but has the special power to read any book in under a minute, no matter the size. He can also write up to seven hundred pages in a little under five minutes, or, when he's more energetic, up to a thousand. His purpose is to read every bit of writing in the world, and record that piece of information in the huge library he is in charge of. He is usually grumpy, but after a good read, others can usually get him to tell any piece of information they desire to find out.

  6. If i could create a goddess, I would create the goddess of endurance and perseverance. She would be named the Hebrew name Abiri which means strength. She would give you strong words of encouragement to help you stay up late into the night studying for your final exam, or give you positive praise to help you finish your last miles in your marathon. You would not be able to see Abiri, but she would have a sweet, encouraging, and a strong voice. Although you could not see Abiri like you see a normal person you would be able to sense that she is with you. She would have some characteristics of humans, like she would play beside you in your soccer game or swim laps in the pool right beside you just to show you that if she can do it than you could also

  7. I would add a god of technology because that's an area of most people's lives that requires regulation and guidance. I would name her Appledity. Appledity would perfer the company of modern humans to her old-fashioned relatives on Mt. Olympus. Her eyes would be the Macintosh symbol and she would have a special button on her graphic-design toga to immediately update her facebook status. She would have supernatural powers to fix or break phones and computers, or if she felt the need for punishment, medical equipment and power grids.

  8. If I could create a new goddess, it would be the goddess of stars. Her name would be Danika, and her appearance would be humanoid. Her hair would be as dark as the night sky; her skin as pale as the moon. Her eyes would be reflect the night sky, dark with specks of light everywhere. She would have the power to move the stars, arranging constellations as she wishes, and make stars fall out of the sky and into earth. She would listen attentively to the cries of wishers and send a shooting star their way if she thought that their intentions were pure. Overall, she is a kind and beautiful goddess who helps out those in need.

  9. The god I would create would be the god of chance. Unlike the original Greek god, mine would make the decisions for you instead of offering you two options. If you did something bad, she would let you make a bad decision and vice versa. To understand think about the idea of Karma, where all the good things you do for others return to you at some point. Or the Golden Rule, do unto others as you would have do unto you. However, she probably would not influence every little choice you make, just the important ones. She could also bring luck. She would have a son named Fortus who fell off his her lap as a baby, but had the luck to not hurt himself, so she bestowed him the gift of giving "dumb luck" that he then gives to everybody at random times. Her name would be Foristalla, after the Old English root Fortuna, meaning good fortune.

  10. If I could create a god it would be the god of information, and his name would be Google. He would wear a long blue cape, and he would have an enormous white beard that trailed behind him. I imagine him being old, wise, and looking a lot like Dumbledore. He would have the answers to all questions, and he would be able to do anything. He would be able to shrink to as small as an ant or grow as large as the sun. He would be able to travel through time, and he would be able to communicate with the dead. He would have the ability to do anything and everything a human can't do, even though he looks like one. His source of power would be his pointy blue wizard hat that would have a big silver question mark in the center.

  12. I would add a goddess of sleep and dreams. Her name would be Insomnia, because when you really can't sleep, that would be because she's punishing you, and making you suffer through sleepless nights. Her power, is to give someone either good dreams, bad dreams, or dreams with an important meaning. She would be the reason that you recently had that wierd dream. Also, she could help you sleep, without giving you a dream at all. Her apperance would be that she looks almost translucent, kind of like a ghost, and she roams around the earth through the clouds.

  21. If I could create a god or goddess, I would make the goddess of reincarnation and her name would be Riviva (as in revive). She has human characteristics and chooses to look like she's in her 20's even though she is immortal. When something dies, its spirit would be sent to her and she would decide what kind of organism it would turn into. It could be reincarnated into anything, from an animal to a tree or even a single celled bacteria floating in the air. She would decide what the spirt turned into by how pure it was in its past life. For example, if the spirit was generous and nice, it would get to be human, but if it was selfish, it would be reincarnated as a mosquito or something similar. This would be an incentive for the Greek people to lead an honorable life.

  22. I really enjoyed these responses. Your gods and goddesses, and their specific powers, tell me a great deal about your concerns. This is similar to the way we know the ancient Greeks' concerns by what powers and characteristics they attributed to their gods and goddesses. Thank you!

He would be able to transform into electricity in order to potentially enter electronic devices. He would have all the real emotions of a human being. He can feel no physical pain.
