Chapter 21 begins with Holden Caulfield returning home to the sight of no parents and his sister Phoebe sound asleep. He begins to go through her belongings such as school work. Holden enjoys seeing her work. After his curiosity dies down, Holden wakes Phoebe. She awakes in great joy to the sight of Holden's face. Home two days early, Phoebe becomes suspicious. "You didn't get kicked out or anything, did you?" Holden responds saying they let us out early but she doesn't not believe him. "Daddy'll kill you" she says. If his little sister is acting in this way, how do u feel his father will respond when he finds out Holden was kicked out of school? Holden talks of going to Colorado to work on a ranch as a job, but promises to keep in touch with her. Why do ya'll think Holden decided to come home early?Monday, May 7, 2012

Holden has been holding his emotions inside for so long he becomes more depressed every day. Whenever he has tried to open up to people they shut him down, like Sally. We all know Phoebe is one of Holden's favorite people in the world so i think he went home early to see her and feel comforted by being around her. Phoebe understands Holden better than anyone else and she will listen to what he says and won't tell him he is crazy. Like Phoebe said Holden's father is not going to be happy that he got kicked out again and his mother will be frantic. But Holden is expecting these reactions out of them which is why he came to see Phoebe at nighttime and tried to sneak by his parents. Holden had not gone home in a long time and obviously needs the comfort a home gives you.
ReplyDeleteI think that after all the events that have happened in New York, and all the disappointments Holden has gone through he really just needed someone to talk to. He had gotten to the point emotionally where he didn't really care if his parents found him all he wanted was to be with someone he knew he could talk openly with, phoebe. I think that it is a possibility that Holden's father was voilent in the past and that is maybe why his mother is so nervous and phoebe says that he is going to kill Holden. Holden just thinks that his father will send him away to military school again. I don't think that Holden is actually even considering going to Colorado. It is just one of those things he says when he is trying to act like he has everything together.
ReplyDeleteI feel that his father will get very angry and throw a tantrum because Phoebe says that"Daddy'l kill you", which lets the reader know that their father will get very mad when he hears the news. I think Holden came home early because he needed someone to talk to and to finally let his emotions out. He was tired of not having anyone to talk to, and he couldn't take it anymore. I think all those days in New York made him depressed and gloomy, and wanted to be home where he could finally be happy. I think Holden couldn't take being by himself because he still hasn't showed that he wants to give up being a child still.
