Moses Vs. Odysseus

Moses and Odysseus were both leaders. Moses led the Israelites to freedom away from Egypt to the promised land. This was his duty because God called him to the task. Odysseus was called to his task when the Trojan War began. He had to lead his men through the interminable war of ten years and then ten more years coming home. Moses delivered all of his people safety to the promised land while the opposite happened to Odysseus. Instead Odysseus did not display caution when it came to protecting his men, and he ended up losing every one of them and returned alone. He reached home after their chaotic journey and celebrated even though none of his men arrived with him. Odysseus probably believed in himself a little too much while Moses had no confidence before God helped him gain some. In the pictures above we see Moses parting the red seas to get his people across. And then we see Odysseus trying to protect his men against the cyclops. First of all he probably shouldn't have gotten his men involved with the cyclops in the first place but then he gloats and Poseidon curses them which contributes to the death of all his men. Many people think Odysseus is still a hero, was Moses a hero too? Odysseus was known for his cleverness and ability to think quickly in tight situations but Moses had extreme bravery to lead his people into the unknown and trust completely in God. Taking all of this into consideration who appeared as the better leader? Both of them tried to protect the people that they were leading but in different ways. In your opinion who seemed like the better leader and hero overall? Are Odysseus and Moses similar in some ways? If yes explain which qualities they have in common and what sets them apart.

  1. I think Moses and Odysseus are both heroes but in different ways. I think Moses has better morals behind is actions of leading the Israelites through the Red Sea. I think Moses was the better leader because he acquired more humble qualities and skills than Odysseus. Odysseus was arrogant and thought he could do everything no matter the task. Moses had courage deep down and it took a while for him to find it. Moses made smarter choices and sacrificed himself for his people that he cared about, but in opposition, Odysseus sacrificed his men so he could save himself. They are both leaders and conquered their tasks but I believe Moses was a better leader than Odysseus.

  2. Moses definitely led his people better than Odysseus. He displayed more heroic qualities then Odysseus. I believe this because Moses actually led his people home, and never harmed them in any way. On the other hand, Odysseus let his ego get in the way, which caused many problems. In the end of both stories, we are shown two totally different hero journeys. The journey of Moses ended in happiness for his people, but he could not go into the promise land. The journey of Odysseus ended in happiness for Odysseus but death and sadness on his people or crew. Moses definitely won the contest of who was the better leader/ hero because of the end result, which is that he brought his people to the promise land safely. Odysseus and Moses share one similarity, and that is they both were leading their people home. They couldn’t be any more different from each other. Moses displayed humble qualities, but he did not have as much confidence in himself as Odysseus. Odysseus’ confidence was overpowering and sometimes he was “to big for his britches”. Though, towards the end Odysseus realized that the world did not revolve around him, and that he needed to settle down back in Ithaca. Moses was the open, compassionate, humble, responsible, shy, unexpected hero, who in the end trusted himself and God completely. Odysseus was the loud, in charge, confident, self- absorbed, clever, and crafty hero. As you can see, they are both leaders and heroes, but on completely different sides of the spectrum.

  3. Odysseus was a poor leader in my opinion. He was a great thinker and bender of words and thoughts but he was no leader of men. Often times he did not show that he had control over his crew on the way back to Ithaca. Odysseus tried to tell his solders that they were not to eat the cows of Apollo but they disobeyed a direct order. Also, Odysseus was the only member of his thousand-person crew to make it back alive. Even if Odysseus was trying to save his solders he did a poor job of it. Moses was the complete opposite in this manor. He did not get to the Promised Land. Moses put the needs of his people before the needs of himself. God told Moses that he would not reach the Promised Land but all Moses cared about was that his people got there. This is a quality of a great leader. A great leader puts the people they are leading before themselves.

  4. Moses did not lift a sword.
    His hands did the talking.
    And more.
