I believe that no characters are evil, but lacking. Characters are also not good, but less lacking than others. Good and evil sparks an entire philisophical argument so that's the best way I'm able to put it.
I think that both of the parents had evil or selfish sides and this is shown in the father when instead of spending money to but food for his hungry family he wastes away money on gambling. The mother is selfish when they find the diamond ring, instead of selling it for money for the family she decides it will make up for the ring that Rex owed her. While they both had evil sides they did love their children even though they did not always show it.
I think that everyone in the family has their good and bad sides. Some have more than one side than others but they all have them. The father, Rex, for example taught his children to be strong and tough no matter what and he also taught them without knowing it. He taught them how not to be when they grow up and to not drink and curse etc. The mother can be loving and caring at some times but she is very selfish when it comes to food and nurturing her children. For example, she had a Hershey bar and was eating all of it and then her children found her eating it when she should of been sharing it.
I think that all the members of the Walls family have a good and evil side. But I think the "evil" in the two parents stand out the most. For example, when the dad, Rex Walls, breaks the piggy bank with Jeannette and Lori's savings and steals all the money, he ruins their plans of going to New York. All of their hard work goes to waste. Also, when the mom asks Jeanette to take $1,000,000 from her husband to buy a house that belonged to her family. She knew all along they could sell the house for the same amount of money, but she refused. But maybe the parents had what seemed like good reasons to do what they did, although those reasons would not give them an excuse to do what they did.
I do not think that any of the family members are evil. I believe that they are just selfish and lazy.I do believe that the good family member are Jeanette, Lori, and Brian are good because they do not get into to much trouble. They make good grades and have goals, which allows them to become successful in life. I think the difference between someone who is good and someone who is evil, is that someone who is evil can see the terrible things that they are doing and does not do anything about it.
I don't think Jeanette's parents are evil because they mean well. It is the father's (Rex) alcohol addiction and the mother's (Rose Mary) bad morals that bring the family down. Rex always takes the money they have and spends it on beer. He then gets violently drunk and goes on a rampage. Rose Mary refuses to work for long periods of time or sell any of the land they have because of her strict upbringing. But both of the parents' flaws combined are what cause the hardships in the kids' lives.
